In a world of seemingly endless countertop choices why would you choose concrete countertops? Granite, quartz, stone, concrete, etc. what to do? With many price points and possibilities what you really need to look at are your objectives. If price is your main concern forget concrete, unless you are a serious DYIer and are willing to learn the hard way you should look elsewhere. While the basic ingredients of concrete aren't overly expensive, the admixtures and ingredients used in UHPC ( Ultra High Performance Concrete) add up. The sweat equity and time involved in producing a high end product is what you are paying for.
In my opinion there are really two main reasons you would choose concrete. (1) You love concrete! Concrete is a unique material that will create a one-of-a-kind surface that can never be replicated. There are so many different ways to create concrete countertops that the each fabricator will have their own unique look( or looks) . It can be poured, sprayed, placed by hand etc, etc. The second reason is concrete can do what others surfaces realistically can't. Whether you are looking for a larger seemless surface, an integrated sink, or a shape that can't be realistically be produced with other materials concrete deserves a look.
Are there any drawbacks to concrete countertops? Like most stone type materials concrete is naturally porous. Modern mixes create a much denser surface, and a knowledgeable fabricator using the most up to date sealer technology will create a very durable surface. As with any countertop you should treat it with care. Keep it clean, if there's a spill wipe it up, stay away from abrasive cleaners and your concrete countertop should give you years of service.
